The Education Service Center, Region 2 (ESC-2) hosted a press conference and reception on Monday, July 26, 2010 to name Dr. Arturo Almendarez (Calallen ISD) as Regional Superintendent of the Year. Calallen ISD is an independent school system which encompasses a 31-square mile area and serves 3757 students in grades K-12. Dr. Almendarez's tenure with Calallen ISD has spanned the course of fifteen years from 1991 thru 2000 and again in 2005 to current. Upon his return to the district in 2005, Dr. Almendarez along with Calallen administrators, principals and department heads proceeded to develop and implement programs necessary to advance student achievement and regain Recognized and Exemplary Recognition for the district's campuses and Recognized recognition for the district. During Dr. Almendarez's tenure, the district has twice developed long-range strategic plans that serve as a guide for future district actions and led to the successful bond passage each time.
Since 1984, the Superintendent of the Year award has recognized exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership. Mr. Almendarez’s nomination was forwarded to the Texas Association of School Administrators state selection committee, who will announce the Superintendent of the Year at the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) Convention.
